New York City is bursting with tourists year after year, due to a multitude of events and urban sensations. Among the myriad of activities in NYC, here are some highlights.
The events most people like to discover in NYC are, of course, the ones which are free. Even though NYC is known as a “concrete jungle,” there are parks to visit full of greenery, such as Central Park and Battery Park in Manhattan. Visitors may be seen walking or riding their bicycles to take in the beauty. During the summer months, Central Park has free concerts. For instance, Good Morning America has their free Friday Summer Concert Series at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. This past summer, there were performances by Fifth Harmony, The Chainsmokers, Big Sean, Lady Antebellum, Imagine Dragons, Paramore, and other singers.
Bryant Park is another popular location in Manhattan because there are over 1,000 free classes, activities, and events happening annually. Some of the free classes are juggling and fencing.
Moreover, there are many museums one can visit in NYC. MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art) in Manhattan offers free admission to full-time CUNY students. Other great museums are the American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim Museum. For people who are not interested in art or science museums, a visit to Madame Tussauds is another trip worth taking, as it is a wax museum featuring wax figures of different celebrities and a 4D Marvel movie experience.
Those who enjoy theater would love to see a Broadway play or musical. College students can receive discounted tickets for those sometimes expensive Broadway shows. For instance, the Manhattan Theatre Club offers $30 tickets to its productions, which are on Broadway and off Broadway, for young adults who are under the age of 30. These $30 tickets are available for Orchestra and Mezzanine level seating. For those interested in seeing celebrities in person, free tickets to talk shows are available by requesting them online at 1iota.com. Talk shows in Manhattan include The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The View, Live with Kelly and Ryan, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and more.
Furthermore, some events that are now starting to become even more popular in New York, include a number of escape rooms and painting classes. Loriann Maugeri, a senior sociology major, states, “My favorite thing to do in NYC is an event called Paint Nite. It’s a great way to get together with friends and family in all different venues across the five boroughs and learn new artistic skills you never knew you had.” Paint Nite features an artist who instructs the class on how to create a specific painting, step by step, in order for everyone to have a similar painting at the end of the class.
People may also enjoy “discovering” different restaurants and food options. Rakib Ahmed, a junior mathematics education major, said that his favorite thing about NYC is, “[that] there are endless amounts of places to eat.” This is true since there are various restaurants throughout the five boroughs of NYC that reflect the cultural diversity of New York’s population. Little Italy, Chinatown, and Chelsea Market are great places to visit for various food options in Manhattan. For those who have a craving for Greek or Middle Eastern food, visiting Astoria in Queens would be ideal. There are many restaurants to try in Brooklyn, Bronx, and Staten Island as well. There is no limit to the number of food places to experience. Start exploring the vast number of activities available in NYC today!
