It’s fall! As the leaves start to change color there are plenty of activities to do in New York City this fall.
Kyaw Htet, a freshman planning to major in psychology said, “Usually my favorite thing to do in fall is to drink some hot coffee and enjoy the breeze.” The Dominique Ansel Bakery in Manhattan is the perfect place for a nice cup of hot coffee. Another option for great food is Umami Burger in Greenwich Village, these burgers will be sure to satisfy your taste buds. And Murray’s Cheese shop in Greenwich Village which has a variety of cheeses to choose from.
During this season, many New Yorkers prefer to relax and enjoy the weather. Amber, a freshman planning to major in computer science said, “The weather in my opinion is at its best in the fall.” A popular way to relax is by attending a festival. There are many fall festivals to experience in NYC in every borough. Some of these include: Atlantic Antic (September 23 at Atlantic Ave), Mid-Autumn Moon Family Festival (September 22 at the Museum of Chinese in America in Manhattan), and the World Maker Faire (September 22-23, New York Hall of Science in Corona). If you want to spend time with family, you can go to the Little Red Lighthouse Festival (September 29 at Morningside Heights in Manhattan). Amber said, “It’s [Fall] good weather for pretty much anything”.
Fall is also Halloween season and there are many events throughout NYC to get in the spirit. One of the most famous is the Village Halloween Parade (Sixth Ave from Spring Street to 16th Street Manhattan). Another festival for thrill seekers is the Halloween Harvest Festival (Coney Island, September 29 through October 28, plus October 31). For a family event you could go to the Oktoberfest & Pumpkin Patch (October 6 at Sunnyside, Queens).
Halloween would not be complete without a trip to a haunted house. The top two in NYC include the Blood Manor in Manhattan and the Gravesend Inn Haunted Hotel in Brooklyn. For both events, tickets must be brought in advance or paid at the door. If you want something beyond the usual ghost and zombie experience, This Is Real in Brooklyn will give you a fresh change of pace. You have 70 minutes in this warehouse with a murderous lunatic to try and stay alive. Another haunted location is New York Haunted Hayride in Randall’s Island. There are two parts: a hayride and a haunted house. Double the scare! Happy Haunting!
In anticipation of Halloween, it’s a good idea to do some pumpkin picking. Queens County Farm Museum in Little Neck, Queens is open weekends in October. The pumpkins will cost you but there is no fee to walk through the pumpkin patch. Decker Farm in Staten Island is also a great place to pick pumpkins. Their hours are every Saturday & Sunday in October. If you take the Staten Island Ferry you will have to transfer to a bus for a 45-minute ride.
Be sure to take a moment to enjoy the fall season in New York!
