Women’s tennis’ Andrea Samson Makes History

To win an East Coast Conference award once is an honor, to win it twice is impressive, but to win ECC recognition for five consecutive weeks is unheard of.

Until now.

Queens College women’s tennis freshman Andrea Samson has made history this season, being the first player in any sport within the conference to win the Rookie of the Week title every week during that particular season.

Samson, who has been playing tennis since she was nine, was also, of course, recognized as ECC Rookie of the Year for her outstanding performances week after week on the court.

“To be honest, when I first received Rookie of the Week, I didn’t really even know what it was,” the native of Florida said. “But Rookie of the Year is really big and I am really excited about my awards.”

Samson believes that her success this season stemmed from her coach and teammates pushing her to give her all.

Everyone on the QC women’s tennis team is very talented and Samson believes that practicing against strong competition is an important advantage.

“Team chemistry also helped. I am so close and comfortable with my team,” Samson said.

Although she makes it look easy, Samson confessed her success was not.

“I gave my 100 percent this season,” she said. “Hard work pays off.”
